Acquisition of Phase IV New Light Rail Vehicles

Project Description

The Corporation currently has a fleet of 119 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) and there will be an increase in patronage as a result of the opening of the Kowloon Southern Link (KSL). It was planned to acquire twenty-two units of new Phase IV LRVs under contract KRS999.

To meet the opening schedule of KSL. Phase IV LRV would be baseline from the proven Phase III LRV design with enhanced features.

The scope of Contract KRS999 comprises the design, manufacture, supply, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning and rectification of defects to facilitate the operation and maintenance of the new Phase IV Light Rail Vehicles. They include the supply of special tools and test equipment, spare parts, operation and maintenance manuals and training.

All new LRVs will be tested and commissioned in contractor's factory in China, Tuen Mun Depot test track in Hong Kong and Light Rail Line prior to their handing over to operations. The first LRV was scheduled to deliver in third quarter of 2009 and the last LRV in end 2009.

Programme

The first 4 new Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) have started passenger service and the 5th and 6thnew LRVs are planned to be put into service in April 2010. The remaining ones are expected to be delivered in batches later in 2010.

Progress Update - June 2010

  • The fifth to tenth Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) were handed over to Operations in the second quarter of 2010.
  • The eleventh to fourteenth LRVs had completed off-site tests at Contractor's factory while the fifteenth and sixteenth LRVs would soon undergo factory testings.
