The collective memories of Hong Kong people are the threads that make up the tapestry of the city's vibrant history. To preserve the many past faces of Hong Kong, the MTR invited members of the public to contribute nostalgic photographs of different districts taken in past decades for display at MTR stations, enabling today's passengers to retrace yesterday's journeys.
While new railway lines and new communities continue to be built, it is important to look back at how far Hong Kong has come, and reflect on the rich history that has brought the city to where it is today - a vibrant, cosmopolitan, world city known for its population of conscientious, resourceful and innovative people who have steadfastly steered the city through its many highs and lows. The initiative is also about sharing - photographers can share their individual perspectives of Hong Kong with the community and older generations can share memories of the past with younger generations.
The nostalgic images of different districts are now being displayed on the platforms of 17 designated MTR stations, one in each of the 17 Hong Kong districts that the MTR currently runs through, bringing the history of Hong Kong alive to an MTR station near you. The 17 locations include:
